Description

The Comtoise is a form of provincial, weight-driven clock originally made in the vicinity of Morbier in the Comté region of France near the Swiss frontier and were made from the late 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century. They are sometimes called Morez clocks or Morbier clocks, from place names in the area.

They represented the first move towards the popularising of clocks in France, and in the 19th century they were to be found far and wide across the country, virtually ousting other local clock making traditions. They were often marked with the name and town of the vendor rather than those of the maker.

The clock strikes on the half hour and the hour and then repeats itself after a few minutes having passed the hour.

Being a 19th century piece, this French eight-day striking brass wall antique clock has an embossed floral oval surround to the enamel dial. The clock is housed in a solid Cherry wood case which is in three parts and as it is solid it is extremely heavy and also very rare. Age related wear and tear as one would expect from a piece of this age.
