Art Deco Period Hairdressers’ Wig Mannequin c.1930

Photos

Description

The generously proportioned angular hairdressers' wig mannequin having a plaster covered head and upper torso in flesh pink, large glass eyes and painted features on a cream moulded plinth, the whole with a heavily Art Deco influence to the design.

The mannequin remains in good condition, there is some chipping present to the plaster in places but nothing serious and no over painting or damage.

1930s evening hair was still often adorned with bands, feathers and combs, decorative styles reminiscent of the 1920s for flapper-girls who had grown up. For those who could afford it, 1930s evening wear was opulent if simply styled, and hair was all part of the couture look. The popular Art Deco style was common in hairclips, and black jet beading was the fashionable jewelry of the decade, extending to hair combs. This mannequin would have displayed hair styles and accessories in favour during the 1930s.

The term Art Deco encompasses the distinctive styles in art, architecture and design, and is typified by bright bold colours, and stylised designs derived from the onset of industrialism, as well as artistic movements such as modernism, cubism, and futurism. It is one of the best loved, most influential, instantly recognisable, international, and elegant of all artistic periods.

Once part of a hairdressers’ window display this quality mannequin is now essentially an art deco sculpture, try it on a chest of drawers and await admiring glances.
