Early 20thC Quchan Kurdish Rug, 259cm x 109cm
Description
The wide runner shaped carpet with broad tassel fringes having a large latticed central field with repeating lozenge pattern in apple greens, rust and indigos the outer with multiple ruled border survives from the first quarter of the twentieth century. This piece is beautifully worn with very soft colours, commensurate with its age. There is a central band of wear and the fringes do show some loss, the shape now slightly warped but the whole with an abundance of character and no signs of moth, infestation or repair.
Quchan is an important collection point for Kurdish and Afshar tribal and village rugs and this group of rugs is known for spontaneous and colourful fields, as we see in this example. The rugs share designs with Northwest and Caucasian Kurds and Afshar and the descendents of the ancient Kurds and Afshar still live in the Quchan area and produce rugs.
Somewhat of a collectors piece, this rug would make a great addition for the collector of Persian kurdish rugs or for anyone after an antique woolen fix for their character sapped floor boards.
