Photos

Description

The rectangular box and cover inscribed with 1795 with the initials JJS(?), with applied floral lozenge motifs to the side panels with further chip carved decoration and ing to the front and back.

The condition is structurally sound, the whole is almost entirely original and with a very fine colour and patination.

Once an integral part of a Georgian home, this box would have contained the families highly prized salt or spices and had the advantage of being portable. Notable events in the year 1795 included British forces capturing Cape Town from the Netherlands and the birth of John Keats, the poet.

A fine piece of Georgian table-top furniture and with a very decorative lid that makes the piece all the more desirable.
