19thC Japanese Meiji Bronze Doban Dish

Description

The bronze circular bodied doban with undulating rim and pierced floral mons, standing on three shaped feet.

Possessing a beautiful aged patina, the top lacquer coating of the bronze has some wear in patches but only consummate with age, there are no holes or gauges to speak of.

This dish would have been used for a simple flower arrangement known as an Ichibana, or, for a bonsai plant. Both arrangements involve simple to display seasonal flowers and plant life but presented in a more artistic and exacting manner.

Bringing with it a certain sense of spirituality, this piece surely has a beautiful story to tell, once sitting amongst the cherry blossoms of nineteenth century Japan.
