Doe and Hope

Description

An unusual and highly stylized rattle, the head forming an open swirl, enclosing a stone ball, with a moulded piece of purple glass mounted at the top. The upper section of the stem is of twisted form, below which it runs smoothly down to a moving teething ring. The whole is of sterling silver, the hallmarks deeply impressed along the stem, including the maker’s mark FB (unidentified).

Beautifully designed and crafted, this rattle would make a magnificent christening gift, or gift for a newborn. The clean and flowing lines are less fussy than earlier silver rattles, which often had complex chasing, bells, and coral adornments.
