Description

A good, antique, Victorian, English Sterling Silver Pocket Watch made by J W Benson and dating from c1886.
J W Benson was an important firm of Jewellers, Silversmiths and Watchmakers, founded in 1847. They were holders of the Royal Warrant (maker's to the Royal Family).
The silver watch case is hallmarked with the maker's mark "JWB" for J W Benson, the Lion Passant Sterling Silver mark, the Leopard's Head London town mark and date letter "L" for 1886/87. The rear of the case has a central cartouche surrounded by a garter but this has some wear through years of polishing.
The white enamel dial is signed by the maker "J W Benson, London". It has the hours in Roman numerals and a sub seconds dial at six o'clock.
The good quality movement is in excellent condition and working order. It is key wound and set with the key provided. It is signed by the maker "J W Benson, Ludgate Hill, London" and also with the watch model name "The Ludgate Watch - Best London Make". Also signed "By Warrant to H M The Queen" (Queen Victoria). The watch has the serial number 35703.
