Description

A very Nice, Antique, English, Silver Snuff Box by Nathaniel Mills, Birmingham and dating from 1839/40.
The box has a nice picture engraved on the base depicting a hunting scene with a gun dog and game bird, surrounded by decorative floral engraving. The lid of the box with similar decorative engraving and a gold cartouche with the initials "JM" engraved. The sides with engine turned engraving.
It is hallmarked in the interior with the monarch's head duty mark, the maker's mark "N.M" for Nathaniel Mills and the lion passant silver mark on the lid and the Birmingham anchor town mark, maker's mark "N.M" and date letter "Q" for 1839/40 on the base.
The box is in very good condition however there is wear to the gilding on the inside of the lid, possibly to remove an inscription (see photo).
