Description

A very good quality, rare, Antique, early Victorian, English sterling silver "castle-top" card case, by Nathaniel Mills of Birmingham dating from c1843.
Castle-top boxes is the collective term used for snuff boxes, vinaigrettes and card cases that have a picture top, depicting British landmarks (often castles, hence the name).
This particular card case is engraved with the Scott Monument. The Scott Monument, located in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh is one of the most iconic Edinburgh landmarks. It is a monument to the famous Scottish author, Sir Walter Scott of Abbotsford.
The inside lip is hallmarked with the maker's mark "NM" for Nathaniel Mills, the Monarch's Head duty mark (Queen Victoria), the Lion Passant Sterling Silver mark, the Birmingham "anchor" town mark and date letter for 1843/44.
The exterior of the case with lovely "tartan" hatched decoration.
The case measures 100mm x 70mm x 9mm.
The weight is 65.4g.
This sterling silver card case is in excellent condition.
