Silver Jewellery Box, Scottish Belhelvie Church

Description

A very nice Antique, Edwardian English Silver Presentation Jewellery Box made by E S Barnsley & Co., Frederick Street, Birmingham and dating from c1909/10. The box retailed by James Hardy & Co., Ltd., Aberdeen.
The inside lip is hallmarked with the maker's mark "E.S.B" for E S Barnsley & Co (Edward Souter Barnsley), the Lion Passant Sterling Silver mark and date letter "k" for 1909/10.
The base stamped with the retailer's mark "James Hardy & Co., Ltd., Silversmiths, Aberdeen".
The box bears a slightly later presentation inscription
"Presented with Sovereigns Rev. M T Sorley BD on the occasion of his semi-jubilee by The Congregation of Belhelvie Parish Church and Friends, April 1913."
The parish of Belhevie is located in Aberdeenshire in the north-east of Scotland, approximately 8 miles north of Aberdeen.
The Rev. Malcolm Tower Sorley was born at Alford, Aberdeenshire in 1862. He was educated in Aberdeen, attending Aberdeen University. He was employed at Belhelvie North Kirk from 1888 until his death in 1933. The box was presented to mark 25 years service (1888-1913).
