Description

Beautiful mid 19th century Inuit carved whalebone statue of a whale mounted on a whalebone base, c1850. The carving of the whale has a lovely primitive tribal quality that captures movement and form wonderfully. The bone is clearly very old with signs of calcification and it has taken on great colour. The whale and base are original to each other but the brass supporting bar looks to be a more recent addition (traditionally the bars were made of bone and invariably become fragile over the years and break). A rare example that would work well as a standalone piece or part of a collection of tribal art. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me if you would like to view the item or have any questions.
