Description

Rare and unusual early 20th century African tribal stool /pedestal / table,c1920. I have been collecting African pieces for more than 30 years and this is the best example I have seen. The quality of the casting and decoration is amazing and it is most likely from the Benin tribal area. Standing at 32cm tall and weighing over 9kg this is large and impressive prestige piece for ceremonial use. It is profusely decorated throughout. The central support is a coiled snake, the base is decorated with leopard masks, lizards/frogs etc. The top is decorated with leopards, swords, snakes etc and around the top rim are snakes. Even the underside of the top is decorated with fish, frogs/lizards, masks etc. It is an amazing piece of tribal art that would grace any home.
