Description

Fabulous pair of 18th.c. French polychrome painted wooden figures c.1780. Unusual form, carved from flat boards just 6″ wide but 51″ long, presumably designed as a decorative architrave for either side of a window or doorway. Modelled as female figures, shown in profile and naked to the waist. Carved features with beautiful original paintwork, note the rouged cheeks and lips and the particularly good treatment of the eyes, and original gilding to the hair. Below the waist the bodies morph into Classical scrolling acanthus leaves also with their original polychrome paintwork against a gilded ground. Some obvious wear to the paintwork and a couple of old fixing holes, generally they have survived in remarkable condition.
Dimensions: width 6″, height 51″.
