Description

Maury
Paris, c1800
Enamel & silver gilt hunter case, 54.5 mm
Verge escapement

A Paris verge, with fine polychrome dial in a beautifully enamelled silver gilt hunter case.

MOVEMENT : Gilded verge escapement, with engraved and pierced balance bridge. Polished steel coquerette. Four baluster pillars with, large silver regulator disk and blued screws.

Signed (Maruy) and numbered or dated (1804).

The movement is in good original condition, and is running well.

DIAL : Fine polychrome enamel dial, painted with 3 cherubs in a clouded sky.
In good condition but with some chips around the winding aperture, and a hairline, with associated filled chip, running from 6 to 11.
The holes in the movement plate to accommodate the dial feet have been moved slightly, so this is probably not the original dial for the movement.

Nice matching gold coloured hands.

CASE : A beautiful silver gilt hunter case, with enamel panels to back, front and both inside surfaces. Maker’s mark JM and letter A (date ?) stamped on the bow and bezel.

In wonderful condition. The silver gilt has no damage and only a little wear to the gilding, showing through to the silver. The enamel painting is excellent, with no cracks or chips and only a few small marks.

The hinge is fine and the bezel closes shut.

The movement is signed ‘Maruy” but this is probably a misspelling of “Maury”. So possibly Julien Girard Maury who is listed in France in the late 18th century.
Although the movement of this watch is from Paris, the beautiful case is typical of Vienna enamel work of this period. So the case may have been imported by the Paris watchmaker.
