Rack lever movement

An early 19th century Liverpool watch with a rack lever movement in fine condition.

MOVEMENT : Gilt rack lever movement, with nicely engraved balance cock, diamond endstone, blued screws, and four round pillars. Signed (JOSh. JOHNSON, Liverpool) and numbered (2785). Protected by a removable gilt dustcap. In fine condition throughout, and running well. The stop lever, on the side of the case at 7, stops and restarts the movement.

DIAL : White enamel dial with subsidiary seconds. In good condition, but with 3 light ripples just visible, so this dial has been restored. Gold coloured hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, with Chester hallmarks for 1818, maker TH over IH. The cae ios also stamped with the movement number 2785. In good condition with no repairs, and just a few very light scratches and bruises to the back. The hinge is fine and the bezel shuts ok. The crystal is also fine.

OUTER CASE : Silver pair case with marks matching hallmarks to the inner. In good condition though the catch spring has been replaced and the bezel does not snap shut.

The case maker’s mark is for Thomas Helsby and his son John Helsby of Liverpool.

Joseph Johnson is listed in Liverpool between 1800 and 1851.
