Antique verge watch, Cranbrook, Kent , c1750

Description
Thomas Cackett,Cranbrook, Kent, c1750
Silver pair cases, 51.25 mm
Verge mpvement
A nice mid 18th century verge with original champleve dial, in later silver pair cases.
MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely engraved and pierced balance cock and plate, and large silver regulator disk. Signed “Tho. Cackett, CRANBROOK”. All in good original condition and running well.
DIAL : Silver champleve dial in very good condition. Signed “CACKETT, CRANBROOK”. Nice original 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands.
INNER CASE : Silver, maker's mark AT, and London hallmarks for 1838. In very good condition throughout, with just one light bruise to the edge of the back. The crystal has a few scratches but no chips. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely.
OUTER CASE : Silver pair case. Matching hallmarks to the inner. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine and the case closes correctly. There are a few light bruises on the back and some scratches, but overall in good condition.
The outer case contains 4 watchpapers, all from Kent watchmakers, and all marked for a Mr. Betts, from 1871 onwards.
The silver cases are a perfect fit for the movement, so were almost certainly made specially for this movement, about 80 years after the watch was originally made.
Thomas Cackett is listed in Cranbrook, Kent from 1748 until his retirement in 1774.
