Description

Francis Gregg, London, c1710
Gilt brass pair cases
57.2 mm
Verge movement

A fine, and large, early 18th century London verge movement, in later 18th century brass pair cases and later dial.

MOVEMENT Signed (FRAN. GREGG) and numbered (611) gilt brass verge movement, with four wonderful Egyptian pillars, beautifully engraved winged balance cock and plate, and large silver regulator disc. Excellent condition, complete and running.

DIAL White enamel, in good condition, with repairs around the catch at 6 and two very light hairlines running from the centre. Nice original 18th century steel beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE Gilt copper or brass, with maker's mark S. In fine condition, although the original gilding is absent. The high dome bull's eye crystal is fine.

OUTER CASE Gilt brass, in excellent condition, again with the original gilding worn off.

The dial, and case were probably added later in the 18th century. This movement would probably originally have had a silver champleve dial.

Francis Gregg is listed from 1691 until 1747 (though intermittently as he was bankrupted twice).
