Description

Godfrie Poy, London, c1740
Gold repousse pair cases
Diameter 47.5 mm
Movement Verge, quarter repeating

MOVEMENT Gilded movement with square pillars, gilt regulator disk, and engraved and pierced balance cock. The movement is signed (Poy, London). In fine original condition, running and repeating correctly.
There are two steel pins on the edge of the plate which would originally have held a gilt brass dustcap which is now absent.

DIAL Beautiful original early enamel dial, signed and highlighted in gold.
Good condition, with just a few surface scratches and a small repair on either side of the catch slot at 6 o'clock. No hairlines.
Nice early gold hour hand but a later replacement minute.

INNER CASE 22ct gold, no hallmarks but maker's mark H2 IDS. Beautifully pierced and engraved throughout. Good condition. The high dome crystal is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.
The small pulse piece lever protrudes from the case under the bezel at 9. This is used to mute the repeat chime.

OUTER CASE 22ct gold, with pierced repousee decoration, showing a classical scene. No hallmarks (which is normal for repousse cases). There is a little wear to the high points of the repousse work, resulting in a few small holes towards the centre.
The catch and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. There is a small dent to the catch button.

Godfrie Poy is listed in London between 1718 and 1753. He was a fine maker, with examples of his repeating watches in several important collections including the Winter Palace, St. Petersburg.
