Description

Gilt/shell pair case, verge - Ralph Gout, London, c1780

MOVEMENT Gilded verge movement, signed and numbered (21915). Pierced and engraved balance cock. Nice clean condition and running well.

DIAL 40 mm. The beautiful signed white enamel dial is virtually perfect with just a few surface scratches. The gold beetle and poker hands are original 18th century, not reproductions.

INNER CASE 45 mm. Gilt on brass. Some of the gilding has worn off the outside though still complete on the inside. The hinge is fine and the case closes nicely. High dome crystal in good condition.

OUTER CASE 54 mm. Brass gilt, with shell covering. Very good colour. The case is in original condition with no restoration. The shell on the back is complete with none missing but with four short cracks. The shell on the bezel is perfect. Seven pins missing from the back and nine from the bezel. The hinge and catch are fine and the case closes nicely.

Ralph Gout worked in London between 1770 and 1836.
