Description

A wonderful late nineteenth century Austrian enamel, silver and rock crystal pocket watch, made in Austria by the famous Viennese jeweller Herman Boehm, in an earlier renaissance style.

MOVEMENT Gilt cylinder movement. Running well.

DIAL Coloured enamels on gilt background. In nice unrestored condition, with no repairs, and just a few small areas of enamel missing (including some on the chapter ring). Blued steel Breguet type hands in fine condition.

CASE A wonderful oval, enamel on copper and silver case. Silver bezel, pendant/bow and rims on an enamelled copper base. The dimensions are 51mm by 60mm. excluding the pendant. The hinges are fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The silver pendant is stamped with a marker's mark HB, and the letter A.good original condition, with no signs of restoration but some light scratches. The inside is enamelled in plain light blue, where there is one small area of loss to the enamel where the copper shows through (near the pendant).
The thick oval crystal is of rock crystal rather than glass, and is in fine condition.

During the 19th century Vienna was a centre for the revival of Renaissance and rococo designs in enamel. Some designs were direct copies of earlier works and others followed earlier styles resulting in original designs in the classical manner.
Hermann Boehm was a very famous Viennese jeweller who specialized in making these recreations of Renaissance jewels.

Hermann Boehm is listed as working in Vienna from 1866 until 1922.
