Silver pair cases, jump hour - Lancaster 1814
Description
A silver pair cased verge with a very unusual 'jump' hour hand.MOVEMENT Gilded verge fusee movement, with unusually shaped and nicely engraved and pierced balance cock. Diamond endstone. Signed and numbered (1164). Protected by a removable gilt dustcap. All in good original condition, though with a few scratches around the pillars. Running well.
The hour hand advances by a complete hour and is then stationary for an hour. This is achieved by a star hour wheel under the dial.
DIAL Unusual silver dial, with a few scratches but in generally good condition. This is probably a replacement dial (I haven't seen a similar one before), but if so was made specially for this movement (there are no additional holes in the top plate).
INNER CASE Silver, hallmarked for Birmingham, 1814. Maker's mark SP. Excellent condition throughout. The crystal is fine. The hinge and catch are fine and the case closes properly.
OUTER CASE Silver, with matching hallmarks to the inner. Again in very good condition throughout. The hinge and catch are fine and the case closes correctly, but the catch button is missing.
Thomas Dickenson is listed in Lancaster between about 1801 and 1820.
