Gilt & shell pair cases - John King, London, c1720

Description
Gilt/shell pair cased verge - John King, London, c1720This is a large and early verge pocket watch, in a gilt brass and shell pair case, with a beautiful movement. It was made by John King, in London, around 1720
MOVEMENT The wonderful gilded verge fusee movement, with the large engraved and pierced balance cock, and Egyptian pillars, is signed though not numbered. It is in excellent condition and is running well. The engraving of the balance cock is of the highest quality.
DIAL The white enamel dial is probably a mid 18th century replacement. It is in good condition but with a scratch running through 60 at the top and a chip at the catch at 6 o'clock. Excellent early 18th century gold beetle and poker hands (not reproductions).
INNER CASE The gilding on the inside is complete and worn through to the brass on the pendant/bow. Good high dome crystal with no damage. The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut nicely.
OUTER CASE The hinge and catch are again fine and the case snaps shut. The shell covering is in very nice condition with one small chip on the back near the catch and a tiny chip on the bezel. There are two short cracks on the bezel and two on the back. About 20 pins missing (out of over 100). Overall a lovely early case without restoration, with a wonderful colour.
