This lithograph was created at Moulot's studio in Paris.

Bernard Buffet (1928 - 1999) was a famous and infamous French painter of Expressionism and a member of the Anti Abstract Art Group. He broke convention and produced bold modern Expressionist images and he paved the way for the modern celebrity artists that we see today.

Buffet was born in Paris and studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts (The National School of Fine Arts). He worked at the studio of the painter Eugene Narbonne. His friend, Marie Therese Auffray very much influenced his work. She was a French painter and a fighter in the French Resistance during WW2!

Buffet's genius was recognised at a young age. At just 18, he had a painting shown at the Salon des Moins de Trente Ans at the Galerie Beaux - Arts. He had at least one major exhibition every year! At the age of 30 he was awarded first prize and named as one of the 10 best post war artists in 1955 by the Magazine Connaisance des Arts.

Pierre Berge was Buffets live in lover until Berge left him for Yves Saint Laurent. Pierre Berge was a French Industrialist and Patron and co founded the fashion label Yves Saint Laurent. In 1958 Buffet married the French writer and actress Annabel Schwob.

In 1973 Buffet was awarded the most prestigious honour in France - The Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur! Also in 1973 the Bernard Buffet Museum was founded in Japan.

Bernard Buffet was very prolific and produced 8,000 paintings. He sadly committed suicide at his home in Tourtour in the South of France in 1999.

In the 21st Century there is renewed interest in the works of Bernard Buffet with successful exhibitions in France and around the World. In 2016 Nicholas Foulkes published: Bernard Buffet The Invention of the Modern Mega Artist.
