Here we have an elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Ring Tree or Jewellery Stand from the Victorian era. The tree rises from a circular base which is embossed with a typically Nouveau organic pattern. The rim of the base is crimped and the tree has five branches from which to hang rings, earrings, pendants etc.

The ring tree was made in London by highly regarded silversmiths William Hutton & Sons and dates to 1893. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the branches and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be anticpated after over 140 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The ring tree is 8.1cm / 3.2ins in diameter across the top rim of the base and stands 7.5cm / 2.9ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 44.7g / 1.58oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the inside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter S for 1893 and the E H makers' mark for Edward Hutton, who was head of William Hutton & Sons at this time.
