Here we have a good quality Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Napkin Rings. The rings are circular with bowed bodies and reeded decoration surrounding circular blank cartouches.

The napkin rings were made in Birmingham by Vale Brothers & Sermon and date to 1885. Vale Brothers & Sermon were founded around 1880 and were active as both electroplaters and silversmiths at premises in Spencer Street in the heart of Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. They primarily produced good quality tableware, assayed in either Birmingham or Chester, and remained in business until around 1916.

Condition is good, with just a very slight flat spot on one side of the cartouche on one ring plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 140 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each napkin ring is 4.5cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 2.7cm / 1.1ins deep. The pair together weigh in at a respectable 41.8g / 1.47oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the top rim of each napkin ring, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1885, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the V B & S makers' mark for Vale Brothers & Sermon.
