Description

This is a good Georgian Scottish Provincial Sterling Silver Toddy Ladle in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The ladle has the initial D engraved at the top of the stem.

The toddy ladle was made in Perth, Scotland by silversmith Robert Keay and dates to between 1791 and 1825. Robert Keay established his business in Perth in Scotland in 1791. He was an accomplished specialist spoon maker. In 1825 he took his nephew, also Robert Keay, into partnership and they worked together until 1839, after which the younger Robert continued on his own until 1856.

Condition is good, with no dings or dents, just a slight kink to the stem and the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after 200 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The ladle is 16.2cm / 6.4ins long and 4.3cm / 1.7 ins wide across the bowl. It weighs in at a respectable 26.8g / 0.94oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The provincial hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still okay to read. They show the eagle town mark for Perth, struck twice, in between the R K marks for Robert Keay, which are struck three times.
