Here we have a beautiful Victorian Sterling Silver Christening Mug. The mug is of tapered cylindrical form with a C-shaped handle. The body is ornately decorated with geometric patterns, scrolling motifs and floral swags. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The mug was made in Birmingham by A.E. Robinson & Co and dates to 1886. Primarily jewellers, A.E Robinson & Co were established in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in the 1880s. As well as jewellery they also produced a small range of tableware and items for personal use. They continued in business into the Edwardian era.

Condition is very good, with just a small shallow bruise on one side that is largely disguised by the engraved pattern plus the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after 140 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The mug stands 6.5cm / 2.5ins high and is 5.2cm / 2ins in diameter across the base. It weighs in at a very respectable 62.8g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the outside of the body near the handle, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter m for 1886, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the A.E.R makers' mark for A.E. Robinson & Co.
