Description

This is a stylish Pair of George V Sterling Silver Napkin Rings. The deep rings are circular with pie crust rims. There are engine turned lines around the bodies and circular blank cartouches on the fronts.

The napkin rings were made by renowned silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1923. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and Birmingham alongside showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. They remained in business until the mid 1930s.

Condition is good, with just a few little dings in the bodies plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each napkin ring is 4.7cm / 1.85ins in diameter and 3cm / 1.2ins deep. The pair together weigh in at a respectable 35.2g / 1.24oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the outsides of the bodies at the back, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter X for 1923 and the J D over W D makers' mark for John and William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
