Description

This is an elegant Pair of Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Salt Spoons from the late Victorian era. The spoons have circular bowls and typically Nouveau organic style decoration on the stems with blank cartouches at the top.

The salt spoons were made in Sheffield by world famous silversmiths Walker & Hall and date to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. Walker & Hall are one of the great names of English silverware. The firm was founded by George Walker in 1845 with Henry Hall joining in 1853 to form Walker & Hall. Hugely successful and very highly regarded they remained in business until they were merged with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 7.1cm / 2.8ins long and the pair together weigh in at 12.1g / 0.42oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter h for 1900 and the distinctive W & H in a pennant makers' mark for Walker & Hall.
