Description

This is a very stylish Art Deco Ceramic Jug from the 1930s. The 1.5 pint jug has a cream ground with an upper band of textured pale green decoration above two lines of gilding. There is a gorgeous sweeping handle which has gilded chevron decoration along the top side, which also extends in a dotted line around the top rim.

The jug was made in Burslem, Staffordshire by Burleigh Ware as part of their Balmoral range of Art Deco ceramics in the 1930s. Balmoral is the name for the shape of the pieces in the range, which were decorated in a number of different colourways. Burleigh Ware was founded by Frederick Burgess and William Leigh in 1862 when they took over the firm of Hulme & Booth which had been established in 1851.

Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks, no loss to the gilding and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The jug has a capacity of 852ml / 1.5pts. It is 15.3cm / 6ins from lip to handle, 10.2cm / 4ins across and stands 16.5cm / 6.5ins high. It weighs 531g / 18.7oz.

The underside of the base is stamped Burleigh, Made In England and Balmoral. It has the registered design number 818045, which dates the design to 1937. The fact that the jug is gilded means it must have been produced before 1940 when wartime restrictions meant that such decoration couldn't be used.
