Description

Here we have a fine, early George III Sterling Silver Marrow Scoop. The scoop is of traditional form with one narrower scoop and one wider one. The back of the wider scoop is engraved with a crest of a lion's head beneath an arching chain. Below this on the heel is some lettering but it is quite rubbed and we cannot decipher it.

The marrow scoop was made in London and dates to 1762. The makers' mark is a cursive W T. This mark is yet to be identified and was almost certainly in one of the two 18th century lost London registers.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 260 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The marrow scoop is 23cm / 9ins long and weighs in at a respectable 47.1g / 1.66oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the centre of the scoop, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the Old English date letter G for 1762 and the W T makers' mark for the mysterious silversmith.

Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the scoop.
