Description

This is a good quality Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Open Salts. The salts are circular with each one standing on three hoof feet. The bodies are embossed with flowers and foliage to either side of blank cartouches at the front.

The salts were made in London by Robert Harper and date to 1874. Robert Harper registered his mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1853. He was an accomplished silversmith who specialised in flatware and tableware although he did also produce a few other items. Based in Clerkenwell, home to many London silversmiths, he remained in business into the mid-1880s.

Condition is good, with no dings or dents, just a small amount of salt marking to the bases of the interiors and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 150 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each salt is 5.5cm / 2.1ins in diameter and stands 3cm / 1.2ins high. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 96.8g / 3.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bases, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter t for 1874, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the R H makers' mark for Robert Harper.

Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which incudes cover for the value of the salts.
