Description

Here we have a handsome Edwardian Cut Glass and Sterling Silver Claret Jug. The glass body is hobnail cut all round and has a star cut base. The neck is thumb decorated. The silver handle is angular, the collar and lip are plain and the lid is domed with a spiral cone finial.

The claret jug was made in Birmingham by William Aitken and dates to 1904. William Aitken founded his firm in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter in the late 1880s. He produced a wide range of silverware for both domestic and personal use and had pieces assayed in both Birmingham and Chester. He remained in business into the early 1920s.

Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, just a couple of truly tiny dings in the pouring lip and the overall superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The jug stands 24.5cm / 9.6ins high, is 12.5cm / 4.9ins from lip to handle and 10.4cm / 4.1ins wide scross the body. It weighs 860g / 30.3oz.

The hallmarks, on the outside of the collar, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter e for 1904 and the W.A makers' mark for William Aitken.

Shipping in the UK is £17.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which covers the weight and value of the claret jug.
