Description

Here we have a striking large Edwardian Sterling Silver Jewellery Box. The box is square with bowed sides and stands on four paw feet. The lid is embossed with an image of a lady surrounded by flowers in the Gainsborough style. The interior has a pale green satin and velvet lining with a tray to hold seven rings and a general storage space in front.

The box was made in Sheffield by famous silversmiths Walker & Hall and dates to 1903. Walker & Hall are one of the great names of English silverware. The firm was founded by George Walker in 1845 with Henry Hall joining in 1853 to form Walker & Hall. Hugely successful and very highly regarded they remained in business until they were merged with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.

Condition is fair, with a few tiny dings in the body and one in the lid. The satin in the lining is a little worn but the velvet is in good condition. The hinge is in working order and the lid closes smoothly. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The box measures 12.5cm / 4.9ins by 11.7cm / 4.6cm and stands 5.6cm / 2.2ins high. It weighs 411.0g / 14.5oz.

The hallmarks, on the front of the box, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter l for 1903 and the famous W & H in a pennant makers' mark for Walker & Hall. There is a secondary partial set on the lid.
