Description

Here we have a charming Edwardian Sterling Silver Pin Cushion in the form of a Shoe. The shoe has a low heel and pointed toe and the sides are decorated with rural scenes featuring a man and his dog, a fox and a bird amongst trees and fields. There is a blank cartouche on the top side of the shoe.

The pin cushion was made in Hanau, Germany and imported into London by Saunders & Shepherd in 1901. Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd began their partnership in London’s Holborn Circus district in 1878. This was a major centre for silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers for many years in the 19th and 20th centuries. The firm were both manufacturers and retailers, specialising in small silver items for personal or domestic use and registered marks in London, Birmingham, Chester and Sheffield. The company remained in business up until the late 1930s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pin cushion is 5.8cm / 2.3ins from toe to heel, 1.3cm / 0.51ins across and stands 3.3cm / 1.3ins high. It weighs 21.8g / 0.77oz.

The hallmarks, on the side of the shoe just below the cushion, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1901, the F for Foreign showing that it is an imported item and the distinctive CS and FS either side of a star makers' mark for Cornelius Saunders & Frank Shepherd. The sole of the shoe has a bird stamp for the maker in Hanau, Germany and the 930 stamp for 930/1000 grade silver.
