Description

This is a fine quality George V Sterling Silver Oval Photo Frame with a visible picture size of 7.5ins x 5.75ins. The frame has a moulded silver front with a broad border. This is set onto a wooden frame with an easel strut, which has a small loop at the top to enable it to be wall hung if desired.

The photo frame was made in Birmingham by highly regarded silversmiths A & J Zimmerman and dates to 1922. The firm was founded by brothers Arthur & John Zimmerman in Birmingham in 1879, operating from premises at Regent Place in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They later opened a second premises and a showroom in London. The firm produced a wide range of silverware of consistently good quality up until they ceased trading around 1930.

Condition is good with just a few little dings in the silver frame plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 100 years of use. The hinge, strut and clasps are all in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The frame stands 24.5cm / 9.6ins high, is 20cm / 7.9ins wide and 13cm / 5.1ins deep with the strut fully extended. It weighs 458g / 16.1oz.

The hallmarks, on the outside rim near the top of the frame, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter x for 1922 and the distinctive A & J Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman.
