Description

This is a good looking Pair of Edwardian Cut Glass Open Salts with Sterling Silver Rims. The handblown glass bodies have flat bases and are formed as six pointed stars with deep tooth cut decoration. The silver top rims are plain.

The salts were made in Birmingham by Reynolds & Westwood and date to 1902. The firm was founded by John Reynolds and George Frederick Westwood in the mid 1890s and operated out of premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter. They produced a wide range of small silver items, notably buttons, mostly for personal use and of consistently good quality. The firm ceased trading around 1914.

Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, just a couple of truly tiny dings in the silver rims and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each salt is 6.4cm / 2.5ins across the base and stands 3.5cm / 1.4ins high. The pair together weigh 242.5g / 8.5oz.

The hallmarks on the silver rims are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the R & W makers' mark for Reynolds & Westwood.
