Description

This is a top quality Victorian Silver Plate Serving or Entree Dish. The two part dish is oval with gadrooned decoration on the rims and acanthus leaf decoration on the handle. The serving dish can either be used with the lid on top or the handle can be removed so that you can have two open dishes.

The dish was made in Sheffield by Fenton Brothers and dates to around the 1880s/90s. Fenton Brothers was established by brothers John Frederick Fenton & Frank Fenton in 1859, principally as electroplaters but by the mid-1860s they also made Sterling Silver items. By 1888 it was being run by Samuel & Alfred Fenton, sons of John, and by 1891 by Samuel Fenton and William Staniforth. At the start of the 20th century they were almost exclusively producing silver plate and remained in business until the late 1930s when an ill-fated merger resulted in their collapse.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dish is 30.6cm / 12ins long, 23.5cm / 9.25ins wide and stands 14cm / 5.5ins high with the handle in place. It weighs 1.89kg / 66.6oz.

The underside of the base is stamped EP for silver plate, S for Sheffield and F.Brs for Fenton Brothers in their late 19th century style.
