Description

This is an attractive Edwardian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The cylindrical glass pot is hobnail cut all around the body and star cut on the base. The silver lid is embossed with scrolls, foliage and flowers surrounding a central blank cartouche and is gilded on the underside.

The dressing table pot was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Adie & Lovekin Ltd and dates to 1905. Founded in 1863 by James Adie and Alfred Lovekin, the firm specialised in flatware, fancy goods, silver jewellery and particularly sewing related items. Their pin cushions are highly collectable. The original partners passed away in 1913 and 1912 and the firm carried on until around 1930.

Condition is good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a slight compression on one side of the lid near the hallmark plus the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pot stands 5.8cm /2.3ins high and is 5.8cm / 2.3ins in diameter. The lid by itself weighs in at a respectable 13.2g / 0.46oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the pot weighs 126.0g / 4.4oz.

The hallmarks, on the outside rim of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham the date letter f for 1905 and the A & L Ld makers' mark for Adie & Lovekin Ltd.
