Description

This is an elegant early George III Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The jug has a spreading flat circular base, a short stem and a pear shaped body with a wavy top rim. There is a scroll handle with geometric decoration on the thumb rest. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The cream jug was made in London in 1771 by silversmiths I S & A N. This firm is a bit of a mystery as their mark is not in the records and was almost certainly in one of the two lost registers from the middle years of the 18th century. They were definitely active from the early 1860s to the early 1870s and may well have been in business either side of those dates too.

Condition is very good with just a couple of truly tiny dings low down on the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 250 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cream jug is 9.5cm / 3.7ins from lip to handle, 5.1cm / 2ins across the body at its widest part and stands 9.3cm / 3.6ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 60.8g / 2.14oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the outside just below the rim, are somewhat rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter Q for 1771 and the I S . A N in a quatrefoil makers' mark for our mysterious silversmiths.

Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by RoyalMail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
