Description

This is an attractive 19th Century Dutch 833 Silver Peppermint Box. The box is oblong with a hinged lid surmounted by a galleried rim. The four sides of the box are pin engraved with foliage designs and there is a double wavy line engraved around the lid. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The peppermint box was made in The Netherlands and dates to 1841. The makers' mark is PK over 63 but we have not so far been able to identify this.

Condition is fair. As you would expect with an item that spends most of its long life (over 180 years) in a pocket or bag, there are a few dings to the body but the hinge is in good working order and the lid fits properly. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The peppermint box is 3.8cm / 1.5ins high, 3.3cm / 1.3ins wide and 2cm / 0.79ins deep. It weighs in at 19.2g / 0.68oz of solid silver.

As is usually the case with Dutch silver, the hallmarks are spread around the box. The inside base has the lion passant over the number 2 for 833/1000 grade silver and the PK over 63 makers' mark. The inside of the lid has the Minerva assay mark and the PK over 63 makers' mark and the inside top rim of the body has the date letter G for 1841.
