Description

This is an attractive Pair of Edwardian Cut Glass Open Salts with Sterling Silver rims. The salts have round bulbous bodies with tooth cut ribs and star cut bases. The silver rims are plain.

The salts were made in Birmingham by John Satchwell & Co and date to 1905. John Satchwell founded his firm in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter around 1900 and registered marks at the Birmingham and Chester assay offices. They were only in business for a short period up to the start of the First World War and their mark is rarely seen.

Condition is good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, a few truly tiny dings in the silver rims and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salts are 4.1cm / 1.6ins in diameter and stand 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. The pair together weigh in at 88.1g / 3.1oz.

The hallmarks, on the outsides of the rims, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter f for 1905 and the J S & Co makers' mark for John Satchwell & Co.
