Description

This is a smart Mid-Century Sterling Silver Tea Strainer and Stand from the 1960s. The strainer has an attractive pattern of piercings in the bowl and a pierced rococo style end to the stem. The stand is circular with a step out part way up the body.

The strainer and stand were made in Sheffield by H.H Silverware with the stand dating to 1965 and the strainer to 1966. Harry Hayes registered his mark in Birmingham in 1896. He produced a range of tableware, smoking accessories and small items for personal use into the early years of the 20th century. After his death the firm traded as H H Silverware and relocated to Sheffield at the start of World War II. They remained in business into the late 1960s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tea strainer is 14.6cm / 5.75ins long, 5.8cm / 2.3ins across the bowl and 2.2cm / 0.87ins deep. The stand is 6.7cm / 2.6ins across the top rim and 2.6cm / 1in deep. Together the set weighs in at a very respectable 83.7g / 2.95oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem and the outside of the stand, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter X for 1965 on the stand and Y for 1966 on the strainer and the distinctive Gothic H H makers' mark for H.H Silverware.
