Edwardian Silver Butter Knife, James Dixon, 1907

Description
This is an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Butter Knife or Spreader. The knife has the classic scimitar shaped blade with engraved scroll and flower decoration. The stem has feathered edges and a pierced scroll and flower finial. The butter knife was made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths James Dixon & Sons and dates to 1907. With a history dating back to around 1806 when it was a partnership between James Dixon and Thomas Smith, James Dixon & Sons was one of Sheffield's foremost silversmiths and electroplaters, particularly noted for their relationship with designer Dr Christopher Dresser whose groundbreaking silver plate teapot designs for the company are still being reproduced today. They were highly successful and remained in business up until the mid 1980s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The butter knife is 17cm / 6.7ins long and weighs in at a respectable 30.4g / 1.07oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the front of the blade, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter p for 1907 and the J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons.
