Description

This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Trinket Box. The box is cylindrical with a lift off lid, which has a crest of a lion's head engraved on it. There are bands of thread and bow decoration around the lid and the bottom of the body. The interior of the box is gilded.

The trinket box was made in Birmingham by Martin, Hall & Co and dates to 1910. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and Birmingham and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 115 years of use. The lid fits snugly and securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The box is 6.1cm / 2.4ins in diameter and stands 3cm / 1.2ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 52.6g / 1.85oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the R M over E H makers' mark for Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall of Martin, Hall & Co.
