Description

This is a stylish and practical George V Cut Glass and Sterling Silver Powder Bowl from the 1920s. The glass bowl is of lobed form with a star cut base and a broad silver splayed rim. The silver lid is circular with a flat topped handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The powder bowl was made in Birmingham by W.J. Myatt & Co and dates to 1923. The firm was founded in Birmingham by William James Myatt in 1895, initially as electroplaters. They became W.J. Myatt & Co in 1899, registered a silver mark at the Birmingham assay office and went on to open a showroom in London’s Hatton Garden. After WW2 they ceased producing Sterling Silver but continued to produce electroplate and pewter.

Condition is good, with just one shallow bruise on the silver rim plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bowl is 9.5cm / 3.7ins in diameter and 7cm / 2.7ins high. It weighs in at 193.2g / 6.8oz.

The hallmarks on the silver rim are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter y for 1923 and the W J M & Co makers' mark for W.J. Myatt & Co. There is a secondary set on the lid but these are quite rubbed.
