Description

This is an attractive Pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Napkin Rings. The rings have bowed bodies with laurel wreath engraving to either side of a blank cartouche. The rims are flared with crimped decoration and beaded edges.

The napkin rings were made in Sheffield by famous silversmiths Walker & Hall and date to 1907. Walker & Hall are one of the great names of English silverware. The firm was founded by George Walker in 1845 with Henry Hall joining in 1853 to form Walker & Hall. Hugely successful and very highly regarded they remained in business until they were merged with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.

Condition is good, with no dings or dents, just a slight flattening of the crimped rim on one side of one ring and the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each napkin ring is 5cm / 1.9ins in diameter and 2.8cm / 1.1ins deep. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 46.1g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the outsides of the bodies at the back, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter p for 1907 and the distinctive W & H in a pennant makers' mark for Walker & Hall.
