Description

Here we have a good quality Georgian Brass Pestle and Mortar from the late 18th Century. The mortar has a flat circular base, a bucket shaped body and a flared rim, all with line decoration. The pestle is baluster shaped with grinding heads at each end.

As is usually the case, there is no makers' mark on the pestle and mortar but it does have the initials M Y over T K engraved on the base, which we believe are those of the owner(s) rather than the manufacturer. We can say it is British and dates to around the period of 1770 to 1800.

Condition is very good, with a nice patina to the brass, no damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 200 years of use. It remains perfectly usable today or would make a striking decorative piece for any kitchen. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The mortar stands 9.2cm / 3.6ins high and is 11.9cm / 4.7ins in diameter across the top rim. The pestle is 17.5cm / 6.9ins long. Together they weigh in at 1.01kg / 35.8oz.
