Description

Here we have a superb quality Early Victorian Sterling Silver Chamberstick complete with its original snuffer. The base is shaped as an heraldic rose and this is mirrored around the top rim of the removable nozzle. The sconce is urn shaped and stands on a plinth and has a hole at the bottom to aid removal of the candle stub. The conical snuffer has a leaf draped down the handle. There are no initials or peronalisation of any kind.

The chamberstick was made in London by renowned silversmiths Edward Barnard & Sons and dates to 1840. Edward Barnard & Sons has a history that dates back to 1680 when the firm was established by Anthony Nelme. Through partnerships the Barnard family became involved in the silversmiths in 1773 and took control in 1829, renaming the firm Edward Barnard & Sons. Their most celebrated creation is the stunning silver gilt Lily Font from 1840, which forms part of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London and has been used for Royal christenings ever since it was commissioned by Queen Victoria & Prince Albert.

Condition is very good with just a few dings in the snuffer plus the overall superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 185 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The chamberstick is of a good size measuring 16.5cm / 6.5ins from rim to handle, 14.5cm / 5.7ins across the dish and standing 8.5cm / 3.3ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 337.9g / 11.92oz / 10.86ozt of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter E for 1840, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the distinctive E E J W B makers' mark for Edward, Edward Jnr, John & William Barnard of Edward Barnard & Sons. There are secondary partial sets on the removable nozzle and the snuffer.
