Description

This is a stylish George V Sterling Silver Tea Strainer from the 1930s. The strainer has a circular pierced bowl and a scalloped rim and two flat handles with gadrooned decoration.

The tea strainer was made in Birmingham by S. Blanckensee & Son and dates to 1933. The firm was originally founded in Bristol by Abraham Solomon Blanckensee in 1826 but very quickly moved to premises in Birmingham and also had a mark registered in Chester. Saul Samuel was briefly a partner but left in 1858 and from the 1880s they were known as S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd until they ceased trading at the end of the 1930s. They made a wide range of silverware of consistently high quality.

Condition is good with just a slight shallow ding on the side of the bowl plus the overall superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tea strainer measures 10.8cm / 4.25ins from handle to handle, 7.1cm / 2.8ins across and is 1.9cm / 0.75ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 30.8g / 1.08oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the outside of the bowl, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter J for 1933 and the S.B & S. Ld makers' mark for S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd. There is also a retail stamp for R. Barratt of Ipswich.
